Dad, I will Listen to you - Prologue
Prologue
Elia lived in a small world. A sliver of light barely made it through the small window, illuminating the cramped room. Elia was lying on her old, creaking bed, covered with a worn-out blanket, a locket pendant around her neck. That was all she had in her little world.
“Awwwwww.”
Elia rolled over on the bed, muttering something incomprehensible.
She had been confined in a small room since she was very young, so she did not know letters. Normally, language is learned by listening, but there were no living creatures around Elia.
At most, there were only maids who brought food and water for washing three times a day. Even they ignored Elia.
Elia was fiddling with her No. 1 treasure, the locket pendant. Inside the locket was a photo of a woman believed to be Elia's mother, her date of birth, and her name.
Squeak.
Good bread, milk, and expensive meat come in through a small gap at certain times. No matter how pitiful it was, they couldn't give just anything to someone of noble blood.
Elia ate it hungrily. Her servants frowned as they looked at Elia picking up food like an animal. No matter how uneducated she was, her animal-like behavior was unpleasant. It was also disgusting that she didn't cover herself. When you look at her purple eyes, you can tell that she was of noble birth, but her actions suggested otherwise.
“It’s clear that they left her to us and forgot about it? Otherwise, how could they not come here at least once?”
The reason the maids took care of Elia was for a simple reason. Twenty years ago, Karel placed a child in the attic that he had given birth to outside. And he left the child in the care of his two maids.
"Still, it can't be helped. If they look for her later and realize she's dead, bad news might fall on us."
"...Ugh!"
Elia stood up at the sound of words coming from outside. She shook the door and made a strange noise.
Squeak, rattle. Squeak, rattle.
The old wooden door shook with an unsettling sound, as if it would break at any moment.
"Huck, let's go!"
Elia frowned as the voice grew further away.
Elia wanted to talk to people. But they ran away when she made a sound. She cried and lay down on the bed again.
Elia reached out to the ceiling. She kept fluttering her hands in the air, looking at her palms that were holding nothing. She was just hungry for a little warmth.
As the light in the room grew fainter, Elia picked up the blanket that had fallen on the floor and covered herself with it. She smiled in satisfaction at the warmth she felt from the worn-out blanket. To her, this small bed and tattered blanket were precious things.
Elia pulled the blanket close to her chest and hugged it tightly, and closed her eyes. In a space where she was left with nothing, the only thing Elia could do was sleep.
It was one stormy day that a change occurred in Elia's monotonous and boring daily life.
Elia's living room, which had been leaking a little rain before, had the ceiling completely collapse during this storm. Even as Elia was exposed to the pouring rain, she was saddened by the loss of her beloved bed and blanket.
Elia cried like an animal, hugging the broken wooden plank while shivering from the cold. Then she was so startled by the thunderstorm that she curled up. Even though it was the first time she had seen the sky and the rain since she was born, she could not be completely happy.
So the next day dawned.
The storm that day took away everything from Elia. She looked at the sky with her blank face. The sky she saw for the first time was dazzlingly blue, and the sunlight was warm. And, there was nothing left for her.
Elia held the small pendant tightly in her hand.
The mansion, which was hit by a storm of wind and rain, was noisy due to people starting repair work. Before I knew it, the open ceiling was blocked and the sunlight coming in disappeared. However, the floor of Elia's room, which had already been hit by the rain, was soaked and weakened.
The moment Elia, who was shedding tears, came to her senses and stood up, her body fell to the floor. The sound of wooden planks being opened was loud.
She closed her eyes tightly as she felt her body falling down. Although she was ignorant of the pain, she instinctively wrapped her head around the thought of protecting her own body.
Thud!
Fortunately, Elia fell onto the soft bed. The wooden planks narrowly missed Elia, but she fell messily near the bed. The neat bedroom quickly became a mess.
Karel, who had been reading a book, turned his head at the loud noise.
Drops of rain fell from the open ceiling, and his bed became a mess. Karel pressed his temple gently, and got up from his seat at the sight of a blurry human image above the bed. Karel took off the glasses he was wearing.
"… Where did this person come from? She's quite sloppy."
It’s been quite a while. In fact, it was my first time meeting an assassin at night since becoming a duke. I was even sick of this extremely familiar situation. The cold blade was aimed at the blurry human figure.
“Uh… Waa?”
If the woman’s lips had opened just a little later, her neck might have already separated and she would have been rolling around on the floor.
At the vague female voice, Karel temporarily put away his sword. The woman reflected in the lamp was naked. Karel found it difficult to understand the current situation. He thought he had experienced everything before, but this was his first time experiencing something like this.
“Oh, ah?”
Her speech was very slurred, her naked body seemed to have no place to hide a weapon, and her purple eyes were visible even in the weak light of a candle. She didn't look like the person who came to kill Karel. Karel clicked his tongue.
“Ohh. I didn’t know she was still alive.”
“Ugh?”
“You’re in trouble.”
That was the first meeting between Elia and Karel, the hidden illegitimate child of the Arost family.
