God - Chapter 24
Chapter 24 : Unfamiliar
Four months ago, Xing Ming had been injured—he took a bullet for Brother Yang. His left arm was in a cast for three months, and it was only last month that the cast was removed. Considering his recent recovery, Brother Yang didn’t assign him any major tasks, only asking him to lead a few brothers in entertaining some big clients.
Lately, Brother Yang had been facing a streak of bad luck. In August, a shipment of his was intercepted by narcotics officers, and two of his men were shot dead on the spot. In September, the ship he used for human smuggling was seized, and all the girls he had bought at a high price were taken away by armed police.
By November, his secret factory had been raided by the cops.
Brother Yang consulted a fortune teller, who told him he was in a period of misfortune and advised him to lay low. He made a special trip to a temple to pray, and upon returning, he replaced nearly all the men around him. Even the only black guy in his crew was swapped out. The fat guy, who used to have some standing, was now relegated to guarding the door and keeping watch.
After returning to the private room, Zhou Sui told her roommate she was leaving. A few guys tried to persuade her to stay longer, but when they saw she was determined to go, one of them volunteered to walk her back.
Her roommate wasn’t going back with her, and Zhou Sui didn’t dare to go alone. She didn’t refuse the offer and followed the guy out.
As they passed by another private room, the door opened, and a man stepped out. Zhou Sui glanced inside. The room was dimly lit, and Xing Ming was sitting near the door, next to a scantily clad girl wearing bunny ears.
The girl, only a few years older than Zhou Sui, was feeding Xing Ming a drink. He happened to look up, his gaze sweeping over Zhou Sui and the guy beside her. His thin lips wrapped around the glass as he took it from the girl and downed the drink in one go.
The girl with the bunny ears giggled, wiping his mouth with her hand. "Oh, you drank it too fast! It’s spilling…"
She was practically throwing herself into Xing Ming’s arms, leaning in as if to kiss him. Just then, the door to the private room closed. Zhou Sui turned and walked away, the guy beside her asking, "Do you know him?"
Zhou Sui’s expression was icy. "No, I don’t."
No wonder Xing Ming had told her to go back. No wonder he hadn’t come looking for her.
She felt a mix of anger, frustration, and an indescribable sense of hurt.
"Zhou Sui," the guy said softly as they reached the entrance, "do you want to go somewhere else? Maybe take a walk?"
His eyes darted around, occasionally glancing at the hotel across from the KTV.
Zhou Sui knew what these school events were really about. Guys and girls who were interested in each other would go out after dinner and karaoke, then use the excuse that the dormitory gates were closed to check into a hotel.
For some reason, none of the guys her age stirred any feelings in her. It was as if no one could give her the sense of security that Xing Ming had.
"I don’t want to go for a walk. I just want to go back to school," Zhou Sui said, raising her hand to hail a taxi. "You should go back. Don’t waste your time on me."
The guy looked embarrassed, scratching his head. "Let me at least walk you back."
"No need," Zhou Sui said. Just before getting into the car, she caught sight of the fat guy sitting in a car near the entrance. Her entire body broke out in goosebumps, and she instinctively reached for the dagger in her backpack.
Ever since that incident, she had carried a dagger with her wherever she went.
"Zhou Sui?" The guy noticed her tense expression and asked, "What’s wrong?"
"Nothing," Zhou Sui said, sliding into the car and moving to the far side. "Get in."
The guy smiled. "Okay."
