God - Chapter 33
{33} Waiting For You
Zhou Sui barely remembered how she got back to bed. She'd blacked out at some point, waking briefly to find Xing Ming eating something. He might have asked if she wanted some - she couldn't tell if it was real or a dream, mumbling something incoherent before darkness claimed her again.
She woke to hunger at six in the morning, drawn from bed by the scent of steamed buns. Crawling out took effort, her limbs aching like after her first taekwondo lesson, calves trembling with exertion.
Xing Ming was gone. Only a bag of buns sat on the table.
Still warm.
Zhou Sui devoured four without bothering to wash up, nearly choking before gulping water to wash them down. After finishing the bag, she crawled back under the covers.
Her phone overflowed with messages - the dorm monitor asking why she hadn't returned, roommates wondering where she'd gone, that boy from yesterday inviting her to a movie, her mother inquiring if she'd come home today.
She didn't reply until evening.
When she pulled out her phone, her bag gaped with stacks of cash.
Six bundles, upon counting.
Xing Ming returned at eight holding two red apples. Christmas today - Brother Yang had gifted each person a crate, but Xing Ming took only two.
"Thought you'd left." He tossed one into her lap.
"Why so much money?" She rolled the apple between her palms, eyes searching his face. "What's this mean?"
Her voice scraped raw, thick with what sounded like a bad cold.
"What do you think it means?" Xing Ming shrugged off his black leather jacket, tossing his apple between hands as he arched a brow. "Payment per round?"
Zhou Sui said nothing.
"Zhou Sui." He set the apple down, moving to sit beside her. "There's nothing else I can give you."
"I don't need you to give me anything."
His hand cradled her nape, pulling her close. "Take what I give you."
"If something happens to me," his lips brushed hers, "at least you won't have lack for money."
Understanding dawned.
Her arms wound around him, eyes burning. "I don't want anything to happen to you."
Xing Ming held her, thumb stroking her neck. "Alright. I'll protect this life for you."
"I'm serious." She thumped his chest.
He caught her wrist, kissing her. "When this is over - if I'm alive - wait for me to marry you."
Tears spilled instantly. "Don't say 'if'..."
Xing Ming licked the salt from her cheeks. "Then wait for me."
Arms tight around his neck, she sniffled, eyes red. "Okay. I'll wait."
"So eager to marry me?" His fingers played at her nape, lips quirking.
Without shame, she nodded. "Yes. I love you. I want to marry you. I want to be with you always."
What she wanted more was for him to live.
Xing Ming's dark gaze held hers. Wordless, he pushed her into the couch, claiming her mouth with bruising force.
The white sweater hit the floor, then her bra, exposing skin mottled with love bites. He traced each mark with his lips before returning to her mouth.
"Those words," his voice roughened, "I'll remember them."
Her fingertips mapped his face - brows, the bridge of his nose, finally his thin lips.
"We'll have a beautiful child someday." She kissed him, eyes still wet. "We'll wait for you together, every day."
So you must survive.
Xing Ming stilled, then sank his teeth into her neck.
"Zhou Sui—"
His heart burned like it might explode.
