God - Chapter 23
Chapter 23 : Go Back
Zhou Sui had considered that she might not run into him for a while.
But she hadn’t expected that "a while" would turn out to be a full six months.
The school reconstruction took three months, and it wasn’t until September that they returned to classes. During that time, border defense soldiers came to conduct drills, and Zhou Sui even encountered Song Weiliang.
He didn’t show any sign of recognizing her, and she didn’t greet him either, treating him as just another unfamiliar border defense soldier, solemnly saluting him.
On her first day back home, she started running and exercising. When the taekwondo gym reopened, she immediately signed up, bringing Zhou An along with her. During the drills, she ranked first among the female students. When Song Weiliang marked her name with his pen, he gave her a rare compliment.
While her roommates were enthusiastically discussing Song Weiliang in the dorm, Zhou Sui was on her phone searching for one name—Xing Ming.
She couldn’t find him.
There were many people with the same name, and she scrolled through countless photos, but he didn’t seem like the type to have social media or post selfies. No matter how hard she looked, she couldn’t find him.
Social activities she used to avoid, she now attended eagerly, hoping for a chance encounter. But from June to December, a full six months passed, and she never once ran into him.
She bought a lot of instant noodles and ham, even carrying a pack of ham in her bag at all times. Her roommates asked if she was still traumatized from going hungry before, but she just smiled without answering.
Her mind was filled with the memory of the man sucking the ham from her tongue.
On Christmas Eve, the department organized a gathering. It was less of a dinner and more of a large-scale matchmaking event. Many male students from other departments took the opportunity to ask for Zhou Sui’s contact information.
After dinner, the group went to sing karaoke. Zhou Sui wasn’t keen on going, but after some persuasion from her roommates, she agreed to stay for a little while.
As soon as she got out of the car, her gaze locked onto a man standing at the entrance of the KTV. Her roommate tugged at her arm, saying, "Zhou Sui, take a photo for me."
Zhou Sui blinked. "What?"
Her roommate had already handed her the phone and was posing at the entrance of the KTV.
Zhou Sui looked down at the phone, realizing her roommate wanted her to take a picture. She raised the phone and snapped a few shots. Through the lens, she saw the man smoking, surrounded by a few others who were laughing and chatting.
In the darkness, his face was blurred by the smoke. At this distance, she shouldn’t have been able to recognize him, but his face had already appeared in her mind so many times. She hadn’t even heard his voice, yet her ears were already filled with his low, husky laughter.
"Zhou Sui?" Her roommate called her again.
Zhou Sui saw Xing Ming glance over, his gaze indifferent, sweeping past her face. He tapped the ash from his cigarette, said something to the men beside him, and then walked inside.
The seniors had booked a large private room, and many of the self-proclaimed "mic hogs" took the stage and refused to come down. Zhou Sui sat on the sofa, and a few guys came over, asking her to play drinking games. She shook her head and declined. After sitting for a while, she got up and left.
She didn’t know which room Xing Ming was in, but she walked down the dimly lit hallway, searching.
As she passed the restroom, she stopped to wash her hands. When she looked up, she saw his face in the mirror. He was biting a cigarette, his expression cold as he walked out of the restroom. He stepped beside her, bent down, and squeezed some hand soap to wash his hands.
Zhou Sui didn’t say a word, drying her hands.
As Xing Ming passed her, his lips didn’t move, but a low voice fell into her ear: "Go back."
She froze, and when she looked up again, the man was already walking away.
