Chapter 26: Finally Divorced
A week later, somehow, Yang Yue managed to work his magic, and Lu Ze finally agreed to the divorce. He also agreed to split the family assets equally with Chen Guo.
Since Lu Ze had no intention of selling the house, he had no choice but to convert Chen Guo's share of the property into cash and transfer it to her bank account.
In a remarkably short time, Chen Guo found herself transformed into a wealthy woman—a situation she had never imagined in her wildest dreams during the first two decades of her life.
That afternoon, after work, Chen Guo went to the market to buy groceries.
But as luck would have it, she ran into Lu Ze's mother. The woman was dressed to the nines, dripping with jewelry, one hand holding onto the pregnant He Yan'er to keep her from falling, while the other hand carried a pile of nutritional supplements.
Chen Guo had hoped to slip away unnoticed, but unfortunately, she was spotted.
From behind her came the furious voice of a middle-aged woman: "Chen Guo, stop right there! You shameless, ungrateful wench! You swindled my son out of so much money and then divorced him? Have you no conscience? Has it been eaten by dogs?!"
Lu Ze's mother stormed over to Chen Guo, her face twisted with anger. With her calloused hands, she shoved Chen Guo hard.
Caught off guard, Chen Guo stumbled and fell to the ground.
A crowd began to gather, but no one stepped forward to help her up. They just stood there, watching.
Seeing the growing audience, Lu Ze's mother became even more emboldened. She shouted to the onlookers, "Everyone, come and see! This daughter-in-law of mine is utterly shameless! My son worked so hard to buy a house, and she divorced him just to get her hands on the property. I’ve never seen such a scheming woman in my life!"
Chen Guo stared at her mother-in-law in disbelief. She had never imagined that the same story could be twisted so completely, turning black into white.
He Yan'er, the pregnant mistress, walked over and pretended to comfort Lu Ze's mother, gently holding her arm. "Mother-in-law, don’t be so angry. You’ll hurt yourself."
He Yan'er was both furious and helpless about Lu Ze suddenly agreeing to give Chen Guo half of their assets. Initially, Lu Ze had promised that Chen Guo wouldn’t get a single penny, but now he had changed his mind. He Yan'er was seething with anger but had no way to change his decision.
"How can I not be angry? Having such a daughter-in-law is a curse on our Lu family!" Lu Ze's mother wailed to the crowd, trying to win their sympathy. "Yan'er, you’re so understanding, unlike some ungrateful wench who can’t even bear a child and then forbids her husband from finding a surrogate! If she could have children, why would her husband ever cheat?"
At this point, Lu Ze's mother was outright lying, turning the truth upside down.
Chen Guo got up from the ground, her elbows and thighs scraped and bleeding. The wounds were bloody and looked painful. She hadn’t expected to run into these two while out buying groceries.
Chen Guo glared coldly at the hysterical woman. If it weren’t for the fact that she was an elder, Chen Guo would have cursed her out.
But the more Chen Guo held back, the more Lu Ze's mother thought she could push her around. "How dare you glare at me, you barren jinx! Last time, you sent people to beat up my son and got him fired. I haven’t even settled that score with you yet! Today, in front of everyone, I’m going to teach you a lesson, you shameless woman!"
Lu Ze's mother had no idea that her son had been fired and beaten to a pulp because he had offended Yang Yue. She had always thought it was all Chen Guo’s doing, which only deepened her hatred for her.
He Yan'er, seeing Chen Guo humiliated in public, was secretly delighted. But her acting skills were top-notch, so she pretended to mediate. "Mother-in-law, let it go. Justice will prevail. Let’s just leave."
"I’m not leaving! Today, I’m going to let everyone judge for themselves!"
Lu Ze's mother began to throw a tantrum, sitting on the ground and making a complete fool of herself.
Chen Guo, enduring the burning pain in her elbows and thighs, couldn’t help but feel both amused and exasperated.
What kind of absurd situation had she stumbled into?
She walked over to Lu Ze's mother and spoke calmly, "Alright, stop putting on this act. I’ve already divorced Lu Ze, and I have nothing to do with your family anymore. Let’s just go our separate ways. Whether you want to find someone to bear your precious son’s child is none of my business."
With that, she turned to leave.
Hearing this, Lu Ze's mother suddenly panicked. She scrambled up from the ground and grabbed Chen Guo’s wrist, her grip tight and vicious. "If you want to cut ties, fine! But give back my son’s money first!"
Chen Guo couldn’t help but laugh. What could she even say to such a shameless woman?
Deciding to scare her a little, Chen Guo threatened, "Your son was beaten and fired because he offended someone he shouldn’t have. If you don’t believe me, go ask him yourself. And if you keep harassing me, don’t be surprised if your son ends up in the hospital again."
"You—!"
Lu Ze's mother’s face turned pale. Clearly, Chen Guo’s words had struck a nerve.
Finally, Chen Guo glanced at the two women—Lu Ze's mother, seething but too scared to act, and He Yan'er, who looked both resentful and helpless. Feeling a sudden sense of relief, Chen Guo turned and walked away with her head held high.
